The Bob Norman Memorial Cruise

We approached the past Christmas Season with heavy hearts as we had just lost a friend, neighbour and founding member of the Deep Bay Yacht Club, Bob Norman. Bob was a constant presence at the marina and an active and valued member of the yacht club. His absence will be deeply felt. Bob was the initiator of the idea to cruise around the island so we have decided to dedicate our circumnavigation to honour his memory. Hence The Bob Norman Memorial Cruise.

Letter to Sponsors

Dear Potential Sponsor,

We cordially invite you to participate in our inaugural circumnavigation of Vancouver Island. This is a unique rally composed of both power and sail boats. Our challenge will be to stay together, which is fitting, because while one of our goals is to encourage crews and boats of different sizes, experience and abilities to enjoy a first-ever, world class adventure, our primary intent is community building.

Our immediate community is in Lighthouse Country, which extends from Qualicum to the Comox Valley, but this is an opportunity to target a much larger audience. 18 boats from 25-40 feet in length provide more than just a traveling billboard for advertisements that will be viewed by communities, cruiseships, aircraft and other boats along the way: the composition of our fleet, the idea of inclusive community-building and the growing public awareness of environmental, economic and social issues facing BC at large and the coast in particular ensures ongoing media coverage.

Corporate and individual sponsors will also receive a film credit, and can benefit from product placement in a wilderness adventure movie being made of Around Together. The young, independent film-maker from Vancouver who will accompany us on the voyage has already begun documenting our Research & Development program.

Enroute, the scenic beauty and dramatic action involved affords advertisers a unique opportunity for location shooting of existing or newly created corporate and product promotion campaigns. You or your representatives are welcome to discuss requirements and determine rendezvous points for fly- or drive-in production units.

Following the trip, we intend to screen the movie at lectures for interested clubs or organizations throughout the province, play it during local membership drives and community displays welcoming newcomers to the region, and make it available to community TV stations and tourism/educational programs. We also anticipate magazine coverage beyond traditional yachting industry publications to provide a wider demographic for our sponsors.

So we would be pleased to welcome you aboard in any way you consider appropriate to your business and budget.

Thank you for your consideration.

In The Beginning

Around Together

Deep Bay Yacht Club's Inaugural Vancouver Island Circumnavigation

June 8-30, 2007

The Cadillac Van Isle 360 (www.vanisle360.com) is a race, while what we're proposing is more like the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC: see www.worldcruising.corn), without the competition.

Individuals have circumnavigated Vancouver Island before, either alone or in small groups of similar boats, but, at least to our knowledge, no fleet combining both power and sail boats has ever done it.

Our goal is to encourage crews and boats of different sizes, experience and abilities to cast off on a first-ever, world class adventure.

A young independent film-maker intends making the journey with us, and is currently arranging financing for the project. Here're two excerpts from his pitch:

"Beyond documenting the compelling, interwoven stories of individuals and the Around Together group, this documentary will be a study of changing demographics and environmental evolution, telling the story of a voyage through both Nature and time."

"Inseparable from the majestic beauty of the coast is a variety of weather extremes and conditions that challenge even the most seasoned sailors. This will provide unforeseen plot twists and critical tension to the film. Special emphasis willl be placed on safety, though all viewers should be left with the impression that they have witnessed a one-of-a-kind geographic and emotional foray into the challenges of community and outdoor adventures."

It sounds as if, at the very least, we'll have a stirring visual log of our Excellent Summer Vacation!!!

Let's start the fun by getting together this winter to discuss everything from boat preparation, provisioning and route-planning, to communications scheduling, storm tactics and emergency procedures.

To get the ball rolling, and to address what it's like being involved with wilderness filmmaking, on Tuesday, Dec.5, at 7:30pm, I'd be happy to screen Race Against the Wind, an hour-long film documenting a sailing trip from Prince Rupert to Vancouver I was involved with from conception to closing credits for the producers of Gandhi, The Killing Fields and Chariots of Fire.

After the viewing, we could begin talking about Around Together. To that end, and to give you a rough idea of the distances involved, enclosed please find a sample itinerary I put together for a charter around Vancouver Island last summer. We can have a chart at the clubhouse to facilitate discussion. Looking forward to meeting with you.

Any questions or comments would be greatly appreciated. Rob Scott (335-2062, rob@westerlyacht.com).

PS So far, eight boats 25-40 feet have expressed interest in making the voyage.
